COMMISSION

Bringing Christ to the nations

Watch the December WELS Connection.
Bringing Christ to the nations is the final priority of WELS’ long-range strategic plan titled “Christ through us.” Learn more about the unprecedented opportunities that lie before us, and consider how Christ might work through you to support and encourage the work of WELS World Missions.

How can I be Christ’s ambassador to the nations?

Consider pursuing one or more of these:

Pray

Commit to praying for one WELS world missionary or world mission field this week. Visit wels.net/missions to find names and stories.

Care

Consider the demographics of your community. Is there an opportunity to reach out in Christian love to those from another country or culture?

Learn

Read Roland Cap Ehlke’s book, Speaking the Truth in Love to Muslims, to gain insights into some of the people that WELS missionaries are reaching out to around the world and that may even be living near you. Find the book at nph.net.

Remember

The work of the church is Christ’s alone, but Christ works through YOU!

Our goals in bringing Christ to the nations

More than 6.5 billion people (more than two-thirds of humanity) live in places where Christ’s name is barely known. This is why God has commissioned us to be his ambassadors—to proclaim the gospel to every nation. As we reflect on 175 years of grace, we pray Christ will continue to work through us to reach lost souls with his saving Word.

Forge a borderless support network

God calls every person and every nation to share his Word. By fostering international ministry partnerships, we will expand the gospel’s reach.

Through this strategic plan, we will nurture robust mission collaboration with confessional Lutheran church bodies in full doctrinal fellowship with WELS, equipping pastors and congregations worldwide to thrive as Christ’s ambassadors.

Equip a global missionary force

Historically, WELS has dispatched stateside workers to plant the gospel, but a world ripe with harvest calls for more workers. Training pastors and evangelists from global sister churches unlocks a boundless force to proclaim God’s saving grace where we alone cannot reach.

We will strive to empower global leaders with Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, fostering a borderless network proclaiming our Savior.

Establish confessional Lutheran seminaries

A strong church depends on well-trained shepherds who proclaim Christ’s reconciling love. As the gospel spreads globally, emerging Lutheran church bodies recognize this need for seminaries grounded in Scripture.

We will establish confessional Lutheran seminaries in key global locations, empowering a worldwide movement that shares God’s saving grace faithfully in their own contexts.

Expand multi-language mission efforts

The rise of mission churches worldwide offers rich opportunities to share the good news with others. While many nations lack Lutheran resources in their native languages, we will work to expand our multi-language mission efforts to ensure God’s Word is accessible across the globe.

Trusting the Holy Spirit, we aim to empower believers worldwide with tools to grow in faith and proclaim the gospel boldly in their own languages.

Pioneer missions in high-risk and unreached areas

While we continue to plant new missions around the world, there are still unreached areas where God’s grace cannot be safely shared. We pray that the Holy Spirit works through us to reach those lost souls in need of Christ’s reconciling love.

Our goal is to pioneer WELS missions in high-risk and unreached areas, identifying and crafting strategies fitted to these tough contexts as we faithfully preach the gospel where it’s least known.

Resources for proclaiming Christ’s love

Many do not know Jesus. Through Christ’s commission, we prayerfully proclaim his message of reconciliation to those who have not heard it. See the resources below to learn how you can share God’s saving grace across nations.

  • For leaders:

Learn about mission opportunities and how to engage with your mission field at home and beyond.
  • Mission speaker requests

Congregations can request a mission speaker for their church and school events. Home and World Missions representatives are available to talk about how Christ is working in the hearts of people here in the United States and around the world.

Request a mission speaker for your event.

  • World Missions promotional resources

Learn more about World Missions and share how your congregation can support these endeavors through our World Missions promotional resources.

Access the latest ministry overviews, maps, photos, videos and more.

  • Multi-Language Productions resources

Multi-Language Productions produces confessional Lutheran materials in many languages and creates culturally appropriate music and art for sharing the gospel in world mission fields.

    Learn more and access resources.

  • Cross-cultural outreach

Is your congregation interested in sharing the gospel with a specific people group in your area? WELS provides support through volunteer stateside pastors, known as Diaspora Ministry Facilitators (DMFs), who have experience working with various cultural groups. They can assist your outreach efforts and help build connections between local immigrant communities and World Missions teams in their home countries.

Connect with our cross-cultural outreach program coordinator to get started.

  • Let’s Go

Let’s Go is designed to encourage and equip Christians to connect unchurched people in their lives to the gospel of Jesus Christ. It can be used by large or small Bible study groups as well as by individual Christians.
